Today was a somewhat haphazard show; here’s the playlist.

I played some of the albums I got when WRVU cleaned out its studio last week. The station’s album stockpile has been picked through many, many times, so we’re talking the dregs here. Anyways, we heard songs from The Red Army Ensemble (an actual ensemble from the actual Red Army), Marlo Thomas and Friends (from the album “Free to Be...You and Me”), and Marc Almond of Soft Cell fame. “Tears Run Rings” is still running rings around my brain.

I am so excited, I'm subbing for Mary on Liberadio this Monday morning! Though of course Mary is irreplaceable, and plainly I will not be as clever or amusing as she is.

I know nothing about politics except that I been hurt before. I do have a new tactic for phone solicitors that I'm looking forward to using: "I'm sorry, but I've decided to only give money to communists, anarchists, or the Green Party." Now let's just hope the communists, anarchists, and Green Party don't call. Usually I just get the Shriners and the Democrats.

My daughter and I got our picture taken at Grimey's Cinco de Mayo saleabration last Saturday. We're on the left in the front. I'm the slightly taller one.

I haven't posted in a while, because I've been obsessed with this.

But I'll turn over a new leaf with tomorrow's show. We'll talk about the Decemberists performance last week and how I had the rare experience of placing my hand on the incomparable Colin Meloy's posterior. (It was an honorable situation, I assure you.) And we'll hear their show closer, which was the most fun I've had at a concert in a long time. (Gillian Welch was the back end of a whale! When does that happen!)

Today’s Seven O’Clock Special was a Paul McCartneyathon which some of you liked, and some of you not so much. We heard my 12-year-old daughter’s favorite McCartney song, “Live and Let Die,” as well as “Vanilla Sky” and “Bluebird” (from the Wings album Band on the Run, which my daughter says is her absolute least favorite McCartney album and song) (not to be confused with “Blackbird”). Then immediately thereafter we had a SCOTTISH INVASION featuring Denny Laine (also of Wings fame), Belle & Sebastian, Travis, and Num.

Our Seven O’Clock Special featured the top three songs from MY childhood and adolescence that the girls at my daughter’s 15th birthday party sleepover knew by heart and performed enthusiastically this past weekend: The Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams,” “Greased Lightning” from the Grease soundtrack, and “Afternoon Delight” by Will Ferrell and Co. (a faithful adaptation of the original by Starland Vocal Band).

(Did I mention that Starland Vocal Band was the 1976 Grammy New Artist of the Year?)

(Did I mention that they wore red, white, and blue jumpsuits with fringe, if I recall correctly?)

(Did I mention that the entire song is about sex and that I used to sing it when I was 9?!)

We also heard The Rascals’ “How Can I Be Sure,” which reached #4 on the Billboard charts back in October 1967, the month and year of my birth. I like to call it the “Indian Summer of Love.”

Here's today's playlist.

Several people called in about the song "Hundred Years" by Num, my new favorite band as of a couple of hours ago. I'm going to give the album a good listen and see if it holds up. I can't remember the name of the album and I can't find it online. There is the possibility that I have not searched hard enough, but I have jury duty today and don't want to tax my brain. I will need it for the important work at hand.

Today's Seven O'Clock Special was a bunch of punk and punkish stuff I played so I could run out and move my car from its parking spot of doom. We heard The Clash, The Buzzcocks, The Ramones, and The Sex Pistols, from that longlost era when all band names apparently began with "The." People really knew how to use an article back then.

We also heard Weird Al's new "White and Nerdy" by request from the middle-school carpool, a song I can really relate to. In choosing between Kirk and Picard, I love Jean-Luc, but you. can't. beat. James. Tiberius. Kirk.

Our Seven O’Clock Special featured two songs from the new Decemberists EP Picaresqueties, which I’m not sure is out yet, but it’s available on Napster, anyways.

Today was the first day for Doug, the Alphabet trainee. I gave him a sampling of DJ administrative tasks, including the always popular reading of the promos and public service announcements. He’s gonna be the most well-trained DJ in the universe, darn it!

Requests today included Gordon Lightfoot (second week in a row), the New York Dolls, the Cramps, and the assassination of Gordon Lightfoot. We preferred not to fulfill the last request.

Anyways, the new Jeffrey and Jack Lewis album—City & Eastern Songs—finally comes out in the states next week. I have been playing it for a year, but we’ll feature it next Tuesday.

Here’s today’s playlist.

Our Seven O’Clock Special featured the London, Broadway, and film casts, respectively, of HAIR: The American Tribal Love Rock Musical performing “Good Morning Starshine,” “Easy to Be Hard,” and “Don’t Put It Down.” Then we heard the Broadway cast doing “Don’t Put It Down,” ’cause the film version didn’t have no words.

I got some good requests today, including Feist and Peter Tosh. I couldn’t find some others, and felt inadequate.

Today I was 15 minutes late because my alarm didn’t go off. When I got into the station, I realized that the last DJ had not turned the autorotation on, which is why my alarm didn’t go off—it was tuned into the dead air on WRVU! Oh well, live and learn. Or, occasionally, just live.

The Seven O’Clock Special featured some artists I like a lot but rarely play on my show. I can’t explain it. We heard The Who (“I Can’t Explain”), Neil Young (“Expecting to Fly”), and The Clash (“Rock the Casbah”).

My new showtime for the fall semester is Tuesdays from 6-8 a.m. Except next week I will be doing both Tuesday AND Thursday mornings, because I’m pushy like that. Actually I am filling in for my friend Walt, whose show College Music 101 is now on Thursday mornings.

The Seven O’Clock Special featured a coupla goodbye songs, since the new fall schedule is coming up and I don’t know where I will land. We heard Terry Jacks’ “Seasons in the Sun,” The New Seekers’ “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing,” and Bread’s “Everything I Own.”

The new Yo La Tengo album, I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass, sounds really good.

I like the shakeup of a new schedule every semester, because it makes the show feel fresh and knocks me out of my rut. I’d like to explore more late ’60s alternative rock next semester. My show remains a general (vs. specialty) one, which means I have to play 12 songs from the WRVU rotation in my two hours. It helps keep me current.

The Seven O’Clock Special was “Jiggy Sawdust/Gumshoe” by The Catheads. It’s the album I was fanning myself with during the Lambchop brunch at Grimey’s on Sunday. It was 99 cents plus tax. Thanks to Walt for pointing out that I should play it on my show. Then we heard “Paperback Bible,” the first track from the brand-new Lambchop album, Damaged.

Today’s Seven O’Clock Special was a coupla songs w/birds in ’em: Pink Floyd’s “Cirrus Minor” and Minnie Riperton’s “Lovin’ You.”

Today I also did the first segment of “True Confessions,” where I confess something and play the related song. My confession today was that when I was 15, I wanted to marry Billy Idol. I used to practice writing my name, “Ashley Idol.” The fact that the “White Wedding” video features Billy with a bride onto whose hand he forces a wedding ring, drawing blood, indicates an obvious psychological problem on my part. Here’s today’s playlist.

Today’s Seven O’Clock Special was the somewhat newly released Editors cover of Stereolab’s classic, “French Disko.” Then, because I couldn’t get my hands (without expense) on the original, we heard another Stereolab song, “Excursions into ‘oh, a-oh,’” from the album Fab Four Suture.

There were varying opinions on our new segment, “Top 40 Dance Party,” during which I played Christina Aguilera’s newest single, “Ain’t No Other Man.” I like that song. So did some of you. Others despised it. Pretend I sang the “Diff’rent Strokes” theme here....hmmmm...I think I’ll play that next week.

My mike was fuzzy sounding today and I don’t know why.

We played Alice Cooper’s “Elected” (by request) in honor of its bein’ election day today. I also played Ella Fitzgerald’s “Vote for Mr. Rhythm,” the Smiths’ “Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before,” and Jeffrey Lewis’ “Don’t Let the Record Label Take You Out to Lunch.”

I got 5,000,000,000,000 calls today. It was fantastic. Except for when I couldn’t simultaneously talk on the phone and work the equipment.

Today’s Seven O’Clock Special was a father and son set featuring Jim Croce and A.J. Croce. We heard “Roller Derby Queen” by Jim, “One and Only” by A.J., and a live version of “Lover’s Cross” by Jim. A listener called in and said he was with Jim Croce in a Philadelphia bar when the local roller derby team walked in, inspiring Jim to scratch down “Roller Derby Queen” on a napkin and subsequently write the song. That’s incredible!!

The New York Dolls have a new album out. I programmed it for the station but it didn’t make primary rotation. Here’s my little mini-review:

Yes, it’s THOSE New York Dolls (early ‘70s glam punk prototypes, a junkie “mascara massacre”), only older, cleaner, and less dress wearing. Like any aging hipsters, the music’s not the same, but there’s some interesting stuff here. Lyrics reflect the wisdom we all hope comes with age—either that or David Johansen has a really good therapist. (Instead of wearing a dress, he’s addressing his issues! Hahahahaaaa! Ahem. Okay.) Rockin’ K12 with guest Iggy Pop is my top pick. K9 features Michael Stipe but is pretty lame. K4 is a vocabulary-rich commentary on intelligent design. K7 is full of that sensitive reflection I mentioned. K1 might be the best musically speaking, but it has the F word in it. I want to spit on that F word, fall off stage, get back up, and then stomp on it with my high heels until it’s radio playable.

The way I understand it, Danielson (aka The Danielson Famile) are playing Wednesday night (July 12) at The End. I don't know what time or how much it will cost. Probably 9 p.m. and $5. I'm going to try to make the show, but who among us can predict the future, I mean, it's a whole three days away.

I really like them. They have a crazy sound and are charmingly Christian. I hope they wear matching doctor and nurse outfits like I saw online. But there's the possibility that it's just the one main guy and there will be no uniforms.

They/he are/is also doing a free in-store performance at Grimey's 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Today’s Seven O’Clock Special was an ’80s dance party featuring Bronski Beat’s “I Feel Love,” New Order’s “Blue Monday,” and Goldfrapp’s “Ooh La La.” The latter is from the 2006 album Supernature, but I think it fits right in.

Our Seven O’Clock Special was a patriotic set in honor of the upcoming annual celebration of our independence from the parental oppressors. We journeyed back to the red, white, and blueathon that was the American Bicentennial and heard David Bowie’s “Young Americans,” Elton John’s “Philadelphia Freedom,” and Starland Vocal Band’s “Afternoon Delight.” If you don’t understand how Starland Vocal Band got into a patriotic celebration of our independence from the parental oppressors, my only question for you is, why do you hate America?

I’ll be interviewing the lead singer from local band The 8th Grade next week, and we’ll hear a few tracks. He’s a friend of my sister’s. I wonder if she’ll be there, too...It should be fun!

I suspect someone has absconded with the new Danielson CD. I looked and looked but couldn't find it. Of course it could be lying in a stack somewhere. Things are not completely organized around here...

The Six O’Clock Special featured my very first favorite song (that I can recall), the Beatles' “Eight Days a Week.” I was 8 or 9 or so when I looooved it. Luckily for you, I didn’t play the song I kept singing after my mom sent me to Pentecostal daycare: “I’m Going to Put the Devil in a Little Black Box.”

After that we heard my current favorite song—from the Flaming Lips’ new At War With the Mystics, “Pompeii am Gotterdammerung.”

I told Mary and Freddie of Liberadio goodbye for what might be the (sniff) last time for a while, since I am trying to get a slightly later (i.e., 6-8 a.m. vs. 5-7 a.m.) time slot for the summer.

We listened to a lot of new stuff today. Here’s the playlist.

Today’s Six O’Clock Special featured two songs (“Benton Harbor Blues” and “Bitter Tea”) from the new Fiery Furnaces album, Bitter Tea. I love it. It’s my new favorite album of the year. My old favorite album of the year was The Life Pursuit by Belle and Sebastian. I still love them. But I’m totally into this new album right now.

Today people called in to ask about songs I played by Brian Glaze and Jeffrey Lewis.

Edward, who works at Vanderbilt, called because he hurt his back and needed to call into work but didn’t have the number. He wanted me to transfer him to the operator but I couldn’t figure out how, so I just looked the number up online and gave it to him. That was fun.

Perry has taken his hands-on and written DJ tests, but no word yet on the final results. I’m certain he did well and will be on your FM dial soon with his very own show.

Here’s this week’s playlist.

Today’s Six O’Clock Special was “Valley of the Shadow of Pink Floyd,” a little three-song thingy in which I played “The Nile Song” (1969), “Astronomy Domine,” (1967), and “The Final Cut” (1983). Perry had trouble believing that I actually found “Astronomy Domine” on a Waffle House jukebox somewhere in Alabama. But it’s true. I bet after I played it they went, “Hey! What the hell is that doing on there? Let’s replace it with some Keith Urban.”

The new Flaming Lips album came out in the U.K. today. A lot of good that does us!

Today’s “Hank and Scots” featured “Lost Highway” by Hank Williams, “Dog on Wheels” by Belle and Sebastian (my new favorite B&S song, one of their oldest, I think), and “I Love You” by Silent4, a cover of the Velvet Underground/Lou Reed song.

I said on the radio that I’d put a link to something on my site but now I forgot what it was.

Ode to a Talking Flute

Here’s this week’s playlist. I absentmindedly keyed the last song in incorrectly. It was the Jeff Lewis Band doing a cover of Schwervon’s “Swamp Thing.” The song before that was Schwervon doing a cover of the Jeff Lewis Band’s “Heavy Heart.” Both appear on the Gas Money Tour EP (2005).

Our Six O’Clock Special was a three-song set from the soundtrack to that classic 1970s drama, Pufnstuf. I used to watch HRPufnstuf on Saturday mornings, along with the Bay City Rollers, who would perform songs and painful seconds of scripted comedic seque to introduce the adventures of Freddie and his talking flute. Ah, memories...Thanks to Perry for that unexpected gift. I presume it was a thank-you for my continuing to let him in every Monday morning. Just think, some day you will have your very own keycard!

When I came in this morning at 5 a.m., I discovered Roshay, WRVU’s PSA and underwriting director, studying in the listening room. Then he had to go because the Vanderbilt police showed up wanting him to move his car.

Perry’s friend Peter visited this morning as well.

I am still pondering my crazy "Belle and Sebastian at the Hollywood Bowl" scheme. It’s really a matter of funding. Right now my strategy is to play the lottery. I hope I win before all the good seats are sold. Alternatively, I could always ask Belle and Sebastian for the money. They seem nice; I bet they’d spot me.

I have hatched an evil scheme to go see Belle and Sebastian at the Hollywood Bowl on July 6. The price is astronomical and crazy. I am working on a suitable escort consisting of either my husband or my friend Brenna. Are either of them crazy enough to dive with me into this swirly idol-worshipping madness? We shall see...

When Belle and Sebastian played at the Ryman (have I told you about that?), they performed “Lost Highway” and seemed to appreciate the magical, musical heritage that is the Ryman. I saw the Silver Jews for about 3 minutes last night...I had a meeting I couldn't get out of, and when I finally arrived at The End, they were in the middle of their last song. I had put makeup and jewelry on, for goodness' sake! The people at my meeting were probably wondering why I looked so good...I'm resolved to eliminate meetings from my life. They are keeping me from getting at the marrow of life, i.e., rock 'n' roll...

Anyhoo, the few minutes I experienced were excellent. And I was happy to see that the place was packed full of my anonymous SJ comrades. I spent no more than 10 minutes inside and came out smelling like I'd just smoked 100 cigarettes. A nice olfactory souvenir.

Liberadio won't be on from 7-9 a.m. Monday (perhaps they are ill from watching the State of the Union address), so I'll be covering for the first hour. Hal the crazy automated music-playing robot will take over the second hour, presumably with various renditions of "Daisy, Daisy..."

I still haven't adjusted to the idea of a show that begins at 5 in the morning. Did you know, Hal and I are the only people (sic) who are on the air from 5-6 a.m. on WRVU? I'm not sure what the significance is...maybe it means we're BOTH crazy.

Alphabet Gets New Timeslot

That’s right, this semester's show schedule is out, and Alphabet has moved to 5-7 a.m. on Mondays! Here’s how I feel about my new timeslot. (Be sure you watch through to the end to see what happens to the appliances.) But seriously folks, at least I’ll get to see more of Mary and Freddie from Liberadio.

This morning I did the first hour of my old timeslot and met JT, whose excellent show The Stretch is now Tuesdays from 6-8 a.m. He seems like a such a great, genuine person and I’m looking forward to getting know know him and his show better now that it’s a part of the WRVU morning lineup again.

Happy day after Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, y’all. For my take on yesterday’s MLK Day citywide march and rally here in Nashville, check out the archive of today’s show at about halfway through: the 1:03 point. It's potentially inflammatory!

Today’s Seven O’Clock Special was “We Shall Overcome” sung by Peter, Paul, and Mary from the excellent children’s album Peter, Paul, and Mommy Too.

I finished the gigantoid Beatles biography by Bob Spitz last week, and his description of the end is so brutal and disturbing that I can’t even listen to any Beatles music right now. Either Spitz really, really doesn’t like John Lennon and Yoko Ono for his own personal reasons, or else they are/were bad people. I can’t quite reconcile the latter with the image that has been created, but I guess anything is possible. I’m confused.

Here’s the playlist for today’s show. One of the CD players is broken so I mostly went from CD to album to CD to album, which meant a healthy dose of ’70s rock via my dad’s handed-down record collection. On the downside, it was kinda hard to get a flow going...

I’m currently obsessed with World Party’s “Is It Like Today?”

Here's today's playlist.

It really, really bugs me that the transmitter's only producing sound through one speaker, or whatever it is. It really diminishes the quality of the songs, and on some older songs you can't even hear half of it. It's ANNOYING! If I recall correctly, the problem is expensive to fix.

Nevertheless I'm quite indignant. I was really looking forward to playing something from my new Beatles VI album, which to my extreme excitement I found on Saturday at Grimey's for only $7.99. But no way was I gonna besmirch the Great Ones with half the sound they deserve.

From perusing online I had assumed that it was a tough album to come by, but I was just having a look around and WHAM! there it was. I'm kind of confused about all the British and American repackaging of Beatles songs that went on back in the day. Even though I'm halfway through the new bio by Bob Spitz, I still can't make sense of it. My album must not be an original issue because it has a little "certified gold record" stamp above and to the left of Paul's head.

I made some other fine purchases on Saturday at Great Escape and the Great Escape half-price store (down the street from the Broadway Great Escape), including a $1 copy of the Moody Blues' Days of Future Passed record, World Party's 1993 Bang! CD (for $2.49), and a $5.99 Rough Trade compilation of RT artists doing covers of other artists. There's a Jeffrey Lewis song I never heard before on there--"Part-Time Punks"--but I didn't play it today because I wanted to focus on the new album, which, by the way, you can learn more about by visiting www.thejeffreylewissite.com.

The Beatles: The Biography by Bob Spitz
996 pages long! Engrossing, but wordy, and somewhat speculative and presumptuous. I think this is what they mean by “creative nonfiction.” Not held to quite the same factual standards as regular old nonfiction. Strangely, however, I was in a store the other day and had the overwhelming urge to buy a guitar so I could be in a rock n roll band.

The Beatles: Let It Be…Naked
On casual listen, I can’t tell a radical difference. It sounds a bit cleaner. Perhaps my ear is ignorant. The booklet detailing how Let It Be came to be is really interesting. There’s an extra disc featuring an audio recording of excerpts from the sessions—pretty cool.

Beta Band: Best of the Beta Band
I don’t know that much about the Beta Band, but I like their sound. I really like the song “Eclipse,” which ironically is not on the Best Of.

Radiohead: There There CD Single Import
This has two songs I never heard before, presumably from “Hail to the Thief” times—Paperbag Writer and Where Bluebirds Fly. I got to be the lovely assistant today on a special '80s mix version of the Friday Morning Drive, handling all the “paper”work while Marc spun some discs. I have no idea if that’s proper DJing talk. Suffice it to say Marc is a kickass club DJ from way back. He played, among others, Alphaville, WANGchung, Tears for Fears, Thompson Twins, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Prince, Tom Tom Club, Bronski Beat, and Kraftwerk. Jeffrey Lewis

I got a lot of calls about Jeffrey Lewis today. I love his music, and as I said on air, he's the reason I have a radio show. I saw him play a coffee shop in Murfreesboro in November 2004 and was blown away. I felt he didn't get enough airplay on WRVU (which actually was better than the no airplay he got elsewhere), so I decided to become a DJ and make it so, number one.

Among other things, John Lennon was a protest singer and a social activist. Guess that's one reason I like him so much. "Working Class Hero" is one of my favorite Lennon songs.

Thanksgiving is approaching, and if it weren't for Hal the insane music-playing computer (and the occasional shift picker-upper), the WRVU airwaves would be mostly empty over the next week and a half.
